Obviously there are a number of ways to market and network on Twitter. To extend your network with targeted connections, you can do an array of things including:
- connect with a friend’s, whose network is focused, friends
- utilize Twitter search to find people talking about certain things
- search Twitter directories like “Twellow”, etc.
But with Twitter Lists, you now have another great way to make targeted connections. People all over Twitter are making targeted lists for you. They are creating an organized address book for you.
For example, let’s say you target an audience in the U.S. who is interested in celebrity news. People who are interested in this topic may not always talk about it (making Twitter search only partially effective in seeking convos from people other than the sources of the news themselves); and they may not list their interest in this topic in Twitter Directories (rendering these only partially useful to find people who want to hear your celebrity news).
Now you still have the option of following the followers of existing Celebrity News publishers but you also have another option of killing 2 birds with 1 stone. Now you can review lists that people have compiled of Twitter Celebrity News sources (or gardening or dog obedience, or whatever you are into) to stay updated and have access to a huge pool of people interested in this topic by checking out the people following the list and the friends of the sources listed in the list.
But now you also have access to an aggregated list of sources that provide news and information on this topic. So you can easily scan what tons of people are publishing and saying to get ideas for your next story or product, find stories that you want to follow the developments of, see what’s working for competitors and much more. These lists can put targeted connections at your fingertips and they can provide you with an easy way to watch your market and competitors.
Check the Twitter lists you’ve been listed in. Many times, you’ll likely be listed in a group of whatever your niche is. I’m listed in Social Media Twitter Lists. So now I can:
1) easily watch what others who are in Social Media are saying giving me one more ‘in’ to keeping up with the rapid changes and discussions.
2) check out others who are following this list (since they obviously have an interest in the topic) and possibly connect with them
3) check out others in Social Media who have been added as sources and connect with them
4) have the opportunity to have more people interested in this topic see my Tweets (because I’m included in the list); and,
5) continue to build on my reputation as a social media specialist

Another example is someone who is seeking a very targeted audience:
I assist with marketing for a client who markets primarily to people in Mexico, and particularly targets people who have an interest in Mexico Celebrity News and Immigration News & Resources (targets in the same areas but further divided into specific markets).
In this case, they have been added to several lists that are on these same topics. So they can now click on the other sources added to these lists, as well as the people following the list itself, and check out the people who are following those sources – making it super easy to find and connect with crowds of people who are definitely interested in this topic. Targeted connections aggregated into a resource literally at your fingertips.
Your social networks provide many doors to targeted connections, are you opening them? We posed the question before about ‘if Twitter lists are a trend, how long will they last?’ and we decided it doesn’t matter, what matters is whether or not you benefit from the trend while it’s at its peak.
So dig in and utilize these avenues for making targeted connections! Are you utilizing your lists for anything other than organizing your connections yet? What other potential uses do you see in these ‘trends’ within social networks aside from the obvious of organizing connections into folders?
