In a couple of my previous posts I talked about Michelle MacPhearson and Alejandro Reyes’ Social Media Seminar and the main topic of that was Twitter. I really got more into it after that and I’ve already seen benefits and made some nice connections.
So I wanted to talk about it a bit more.
Twitter is a “free social networking and micro-blogging service” that is taking its place in the Social Media arena.
You can post to Twitter in many different ways including: directly from twitter.com; from a posting service like Twhirl; from your cell; and even from your blog if you install a widget that supports Twitter feeds and posting (I use Twitter Tools which places my Twitter updates on my blog & allows me to ‘Tweet’ from my blog. It also allows for some other options that I don’t use such as creating a blog post when you ‘Tweet’ or creating a ‘Tweet’ when you create a blog post.)
Officially launching in October of 2006, it’s quickly becoming a top social tool that can intertwine socialization, connections and marketing.
Twitter allows you to post up to 140 characters therefore forcing people to be to-the-point. Socializers, top Internet Marketers, Higher Education, media outlets and even Presidential Candidates are using it.
I originally signed up for Twitter sometime last year to do a ‘website review’ for an IMer I work for. I visited so many sites that I didn’t find the time to really go back to most of them or do much with them other than review what they did.
Then I started using it to ‘bookmark’ things I liked or was promoting; nothing more. I really didn’t see much of a result from it then.
After sitting in on Alejandro Reyes’ and Michelle MacPhearson’s Social Media Webinar, I realized I needed to ‘get my Tweet on’. I went back and looked around and saw that it really had grown since I first signed up.
Not only that but I realized that I needed to start creating genuine relationships there and creating a following. For the most part, if you ‘follow’ someone, they’ll follow you back. People who are following you are largely the ones who are going to see your ‘Tweets’.
I also took a look at the people who are using the service and the variety is wide, as referenced above. People are using it to make quick posts about what they’re currently doing – whether it be personal or business; share sites and posts they feel are worth sharing; gathering information on what people want; and even to let people know about their own sites or products.
Twitter is a powerful connection tool that can link you to many people in whatever your arena.
The key, however, is not just to promote, promote, promote – it’s to actually interact and sprinkle some promotions along the way. Overkill is a turn-off no matter where or how you do it.
Working for a successful IMer as her VA and working on some other projects for IMers, as well as being active in some of the top IM forums, has connected me to a lot of people but just since sitting in on Alejandro’s and Michelle’s conference call I’ve connected to other top IMers I haven’t ever connected to before just from becoming more active in Twitter.
I started following a bunch of people who are into Internet Marketing and Social Marketing and they followed me back and we’ve opened communication. Who knows if I would have ever gotten directly involved with some of these people if not for Twitter.
It’s amazing the doors that can be opened via Twitter.
You can utilize Twitter, and offer your own value, in any niche but since I’m into Internet Marketing and Social Media let me just rattle off a few people that are on Twitter: Michelle MacPhearson; Ed Dale; and John Reese just to name a few – there are MANY more – maybe I’ll make you up a little longer list at some point. If you don’t know who they are, and you’re into Internet Marketing, I suggest you find out – like yesterday.
And, yes, I’m there too! You can check me out and follow me at Karen J. aka areaK on Twitter.
Aside from the great people I’ve met thanks to Twitter, I have discovered so many interesting and helpful articles, tools and resources. People are always “Tweeting” about something. It’s like the Internet funneled into one spot – it’s great. All day and all night, Tweet after Tweet about everything you can imagine. Some stuff funny, some stuff weird, some stuff interesting, cool, helpful, awesome, etc. I really don’t think I would have found all that info on my own – and if I would have, definitely not in the short time frame that I found them thanks to Twitter.
Alejandro made a video that delves a bit more into Twitter and how it can be used, you can check it out here: Alejandro’s Twitter Video. You can check out Alejandro on Twitter too at Alejandro on Twitter.
He’ll be talking more about Twitter and how to properly use it and I will too. Mind you I don’t waste much time on things that don’t work for me; if it works for me, it can work for you. There’s just TOO much going on out here to waste time!
I’m addicted to Twitter now just like I was addicted to chat rooms when they first popped up on the scene.
So, get your Twitter on! I’ll see you there!
Karen J.
