With the release of Google Social Search (experiment but certainly a next step in social media), the stock in Social Media just increased (metaphorically speaking).  Now when you search for something there will be an additional results section that shows results from your friends…and their friends?!

If you utilize social media marketing, this is carries some punch!

Within the social sphere, we connect and ‘share’. Google Social Search really kicks the sharing up a notch by opening up another opportunity to appear in Google search results!

Watch this video on how it works (and try to keep the drool off your keyboard) and then keep reading.

This is powerful.  Matt explains how not only will you see results from ‘friends’ within your social circle but from their friends too.  Reverse this. Someone in your network searches for something you’re related to…you could show up in their search results.  Or, if one of your friends’ friends search for something you’re related to, you could show up in their search results when they perform the search = traffic.

And think about the POWER behind the social search results.  Whose recommendations, reviews, products are we going to look at first? Some random results or our FRIENDS’ results?  We tend to lean toward seeing what our friends recommend or have to say about something…or offer.  Even if we’ve never met them in person, we’ve likely either gained some familiarity with them or may tend to still give them preference because they’re in our social circle one way or the other.

And if  you’re a ‘local’ business – the potential for you is kicked up a notch too.  If you’ve been participating in social networks, and you should be, here’s your chance to up the anti.  If you’ve been connecting with people in your local area on social networks, you’re going to get an ‘in’ when they search for your local product, business or service.  If you haven’t been connecting with them, bump that up on your priorities.

This is how Google Social Search would return search results:

What are your thoughts on Google Social Search and how you think it will affect traffic? What do you think about this step forward in Social Media and the direction we’re heading? Are you an entrepreneur or business owner who is seeing success with Social Media or struggling with it?

Update: just read a post on Rick Butts’ blog that addresses a viewpoint on whether there ‘s any reason in joining your friends’ social networks  if you’re already on Facebook and Twitter and are invited to another.  As I commented over there, there are points on both sides (why you may or may not) but with Google Social Search in play, some additional thought may need to go into whether you accept that invite and connect with friends on various networks.

We all want to get into the top Google search results and, again, this is one more opportunity to do so. And it’s a further extension of word-of-mouth marketing – a friend’s POV or recommendation or even a friend-of-a-friend.
