Yesterday I tweeted,

“Social Networking Tip: Don’t join EVERY group on the planet! Be selective and actually utilize the ones you are part of,”

and a few people took interest so I thought I would talk a bit more about it.

I noticed this before, but yesterday I was just like “seriously?” I know someone who joins practically every group they get an invite or recommendation for.  Groups in different languages, groups they cannot possibly have an interest in; any and every group, doesn’t matter.  FAIL WHALE!

For what? What’s the purpose? How can you possibly effectively participate and/or market in all of those hundreds of irrelevant groups?

Just because a group exists doesn’t mean you have to be a member. Be selective and join groups that you really do have an interest in and/or groups that would be prime for you to network in considering your business; and utilize those groups.

Instead of spending your time joining every group on the planet, UTILIZE the relevant groups that you’re part of. Just BEING a member does nothing for you.  People aren’t going to come looking for you (well, a few might; or they might friend you if they find you in the group so they can increase their friend count) but you have to put yourself out there and BE SOCIAL.

You have to:

  • spend time in your groups
  • join in discussions
  • introduce yourself to people
  • start your own discussions
  • comment in various areas of the groups with your 2 cents
  • BE SEEN and HEARD!

EXISTING IS NOT ENOUGH!

Social Networks are very valuable but you must:

  • be social
  • strategize - how can you get people to notice you and interact with you?
  • realize that relationships rule over numbers in this game

Your results will be much better.

So stop joining every single thing that’s put in front of you and “Just Say No” if it’s not relative to you. Thinking that if you are part of 5k groups, you’ll have massive attention is just all wrong; you’ll be so lost in the shuffle.

Sure, join plenty of groups, don’t get me wrong; just, again, make sure they are relative, preferably in your language, and keep them manageable so that you can effectively utilize them. …and don’t spam groups with messages that don’t fit the group - no one cares and you just wasted your time when you could have spent that time doing something effective.

Be picky!!!
