I saw via my search stats that a couple of people visited my blog from the search terms “twitter contest ideas” and I briefly touched on this in one of my previous blog posts but not in a ton of detail so let’s talk about it!
Contests rule. People love free stuff! I have entered a number of Twitter contests, and won a Starbucks (YUMMY) card from @TheWizardOfOne’s Twitter contest a month or so ago (thanks again, you rock!)
So the fab thing about Twitter contests is that you always have to follow the host and RT their Tweet about the contest – which means the host gets more exposure and new followers. I’ve seen people gain MASSIVE amounts of new followers due to Twitter contests. And, again, I enter them frequently. Why not, I love free stuff too!
So what should you give away? The possibilities are endless. Of course, you have to take into consideration what you can afford.
Here are some ideas. Some of them are obvious, some of them are high-end, and some of them are cheap (and that’s okay! people love free stuff whether it’s $10 worth of free stuff or $1k worth of free stuff)
- Money
- TV, Digital Camera, Digital Video Recorder
- A book – a GOOD book, a real book or an extremely valuable ebook (no junk please). Ebooks should be avoided unless they just totally rock per the rest of the world, and not just you.
- A gift card – Starbucks is popular, WalMart, Amazon, ITunes, an online store, etc. It can be for $10 or $1000…anywhere in between, or more
- A free service – free subscription to your online service or program; or xxx amount of free hours of your service (virtual assistant services, social media services, website or blog services, whatever you do) – just something that’s normally paid for
- Free gifts – i.e., if you hand-make some sort of crafts or jewelry, etc.
- An ipod, MP3 player, cell phone, game system
- A computer, laptop or netbook
- A trip
- Pay for a service for them even if it’s not your service, i.e. buy them 6 months or a year’s worth of an online data backup service or something
The possibilities are endless. It can be most anything that has some sort of value. Grab a prize or get creative.
The contestants will have fun, the winner will love you, you’ll get more followers and more exposure and everyone’s happy!
Please share your Twitter contest ideas and let us know of any rocking Twitter contests that are currently going on!
@JohnChow and @Clickbooth are currently running a $5000 contest. (hell yes I entered it!

Karen, Great write-up on Twitter Contest ideas. Everything you said is so true. The contest we ran (that you won!) was a cheap simple Starbucks card giveaway yet it gave me 1000 new followers and 3 happy winners like yourself. I was able to make 4 strategic partnerships out of the exposure that created a WIN-WIN for the other party and myself. I also received 2 new clients from the contest.
And, YES I did sign-up for @JohnChow and @Clickbooth currently running $5000 contest after reading your write-up. Thanks for the great tips.

P.S. Watch out for our (larger) electronics giveaway in August!

Great article! For our blog and ecommerce site, we’re running our first Twitter contest for a handbag giveaway. The contest has helped us gain about 150 followers in 5 days. Not such a big number but it’s a GREAT leap for our company. Some of the followers are also notifying us on our blog when they retweet the message. They seem excited about the contest which definitely makes us happy!
